SouthConnect
Overview
SouthConnect is a private electronic network of health care providers in the Brisbane South region. It provides general practices and other health care providers with the opportunity to transfer and access information in a secure electronic environment.

SouthConnect is an extension of the Townsville General Practice Network’s (formally the Townsville Division of General Practice) Centralised Information Management System (CIMS) which has been funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing’s Managed Health Network Grants.
In the first instance, BSDGP are seeking to involve ten general practices from within the Division and will trial the network through a project aimed at improving electronic communications between psychiatrists from Belmont Private Hospital and GPs. However, it is anticipated that in the longer term SouthConnect will include a range of health care providers in the network including specialists, allied health, Queensland Health and private hospitals.
Initial applications offered by the network include providing the internet connection for the practice and email hosting (using the practice’s current domain name or a new one can be purchased though SouthConnect). SouthConnect will also offer remote data storage which can be utilised as a backup solution for a practice’s data.
Potential future developments for SouthConnect include the hosting of applications which facilitate the sharing of patient clinical data, information on hospital waiting lists and electronic referral and discharge summaries.
BSDGP are subsidising a limited number of general practice connections to SouthConnect by covering the cost of the Connection Fee. A monthly fee still applies which varies depending on the connection speed.

- BSDGP are working with Townsville General Practice Network to implement an electronic referral process between GPs and Belmont Private Hospital
