General practice Liaison and Assessment Service – Working with Psychiatrists ( GLAS) 

 

Overview

GLAS is an innovative program facilitating GP referrals for “one off assessment and management plans” by Psychiatrists, provided under Medicare Benefit Scheme item numbers 291 and 293 where appropriate. GLAS is a jointly developed program by BSDGP and Belmont Private Hospital (BPH).

Objectives

To provide a quick and easy referral system for GPs to psychiatrists.

To improve early access and more availability of appointments for patients with mental health issues, improve support and communication for GPs from Psychiatrists at BPH.

 

Program Details

An easy referral system for GPs to Psychiatrist at BPH for item 291 and 293 assessment and management plans (mental health)

  • One person to ring, one person to talk to for all aspects of referral
  • Item 291 assessments are for patients you choose to manage in your practice
  • Appointments usually available within 1 – 2 weeks of request
  • Written diagnosis and management plan back to you within 2 weeks of the assessment
  • Individual billing by  private Psychiatrists
  • Brief protocol to answer when you ring to ensure appropriate referral

 

Program Achievements

Private Psychiatrists at BPH have organised to set aside designated times especially for the GLAS program thus improving access and communication for GPs and their patients by increasing the referral base and support available. Belmont Private Hospital has appointed a dedicated coordinator to ensure that the service meets the needs of our community and GPs
